Pennsylvania American Water Customers in Philipsburg Service Area Urged to Conserve Water

Pennsylvania American Water today announced that customers in the Philipsburg service area are asked to continue to follow voluntary water conservation measures. However, the company has scaled back its request from a 10 percent voluntary reduction to a 5 percent reduction.

On November 6, the company originally requested customers in the Philipsburg area to conserve water due to an equipment malfunction at two well stations that serve the area. Crews completed repairs to the well stations, which are now operating at normal levels. The company’s revised request follows the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection drought watch announcement on November 7, 2008 for 29 north central and western Pennsylvania counties, including Centre and Clearfield counties.

“Currently, our sources are meeting the demands of our customers,” stated Robert Schnitzler, production manager, Pennsylvania American Water. “However, we realize that due to below normal rainfall levels, conditions can change very quickly. We are carefully monitoring our supplies and are asking that our customers do their part now, so that we don’t face more severe conditions later.”

“Wise water usage is good not only for the environment but also for the pocketbook,” added Schnitzler. “We believe that by educating the public about efficient water use, together we can preserve water supplies to meet future needs.”

Pennsylvania American Water urges customers to conserve water by offering these simple tips to use water wisely:

Inside your house:
• Install water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators in your sinks
• Shorten showers to 7-10 minutes
• Turn off the water while brushing teeth
• Run only full loads in your dishwasher
• Rinse produce in a basin rather than under running water
• Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the size of your load
• Locate and repair all leaks in faucets, toilets, and water-using appliances
• Reduce the number of toilet flushes per day. Each flush uses about 5 gallons.
